Thank you for your reply. This information is very helpful. I should have mentioned that as far as I know, my Grandfather was a civilian employee building the ships. How would I get this information?

This is in response to your inquiry to the National Archives related to Naval personnel records of your grandfather who died while working at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 1942.
If your grandfather was a civilian working at the naval base, you should contact the NPRC Annex for his personnel records.

If your grandfather was enlisted in the Navy, his Official Military Personnel File (OMPF), which includes your DD-214 that lists his dates and ships or units of assignment, can be obtained from the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) in St. Louis, MO.You may apply online at http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/ or send in your request via postal mail.
Our holdings at Archives 2 contain ship or unit records, such as Deck Logs and Muster Rolls. When you find out if your grandfather was civilian or enlisted and the unit he was attached to, email that information to archives2reference@nara.gov as we may have additional records related to this incident.

There were no DD-214's until AFTER WWII. There was just an Honorable discharge.
