I’m doing research on a Private Michael Peter Aaron and he was in the 3rd Marine Division, 3rd Battalion, 26th Marines, L Company. I would like to pull his service record also but I don’t know how to do that!

Thank you for posting on the History Hub!
This is in response to your inquiry to the National Archives related to the Marine Corps service records and unit records of L Co., 3rd Bn, 26th Mar, 3rd Mar Div for dates in WWII and Viet Nam.
Mr. Aaron’s Official Military Personnel File (OMPF), which includes his DD-214 that lists his dates and ships or units of assignment, can be obtained from the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) in St. Louis, MO using the attached SF-180.You may apply online at http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/ or send in your request via postal mail. You can check “other” and write-in “all files in his OMPF.”
Our main body of MC unit records for WWII are the Geographic Files, which are organized by campaign. A brief search of these records, the 3rd Bn, 26th Marines only has two files, both are during Iwo Jima - a unit journal and messages.
These records are available in our College Park, MD reading room. If you would like to schedule a visit, please contact archives2reference@nara.gov to start the virtual consultation process. You could also hire a researcher to conduct research on your behalf. A list of independent researchers can be found on our webpage: https://www.archives.gov/research/hire-help.
We can also provide you with a price quote for ordering copies of those records. Our current fee for electrostatic (paper) or digital (on CD-R or download) copies is $0.80 per page with a minimum mail order fee of $20.00. However, you would need to email us directly at archives2reference@nara.gov to create a price quote. Please include an address, phone number and the exact dates of interest with your email. Allow 30 - 60 days for delivery.
During Viet Nam, 0ur holdings contain original paper command chronologies for the 3rd Bn, 26th Marines from October 1966 to January 1970. However, these records are currently unavailable to the public, as they are undergoing preservation and scanning for availability on our catalog.
Command chronologies of the 3rd Bn, 26th Marines are available at www.recordsofwar.com At the top of the page, click on The US Marines in Viet Nam. Here is the direct link: www.recordsofwar.com/vietnam/usmc/USMC_Rvn.htm On the left side of the page, scroll down to the unit, click on it and the monthly Command Chronologies will appear on the right side. When you click on the link, a new page from the Texas Tech University, The Vietnam Center and Archive will open. Locate and click on the PDF icon to download the history.
We invite you to continue the conversation with community members on History Hub, but should you have follow up questions for the staff at Archives II, please email us at archives2reference@nara.gov so that we can assist you further.
