Ellsworth Eugene Weiler’s Navy Records on the USS Sands APD-13

Did it ever dock in Beaumont, Texas or Lafayette, Louisiana between January and March of 1944 or was he granted leave during that time? I’ve searched on Ancestry.com, but I found the muster rolls and they are three months apart. For instance, I found one for December 31, 1943. The next date is March 31, 1944.

Thank you for posting your question on History Hub in regards to the muster rolls for the USS Sands (APD-13)!

Indexing on ancestry can often mean that sometimes you can’t find Muster Rolls with a specific individual. The entire muster roll for the USS Sands can be found online here, with the dates you’re interested in starting on page 438.

    https://catalog.archives.gov/id/192558005?objectPage=438

If the individual you are looking for is not listed on the muster roll on those dates, it may be worth looking at the deck logs for the USS Sands during those months. Deck logs would also tell where the USS Sands was docked during those months.

Deck Logs are a brief record of the daily administrative activities of a ship. It includes journal-style entries of the ship's administrative activities; location and course of travel; disciplinary procedures; and any unusual events.

We can provide copies of deck logs for a fee. Please note that our current fee for paper reproduction or digital transfer copies is $0.80 per page with a minimum mail order fee of $20.00. Allow 90-120 days for delivery. Please do not send a check or money order until you have received a reproduction quote. To create a reproduction quote our system requires specific information. Please email archives2reference@nara.gov with the following information in order for us to provide you with a reproduction quote.

Another way to track an individual would be to request their Official Military Personnel File (OMPF). OMPFs and medical files of Enlisted Personnel of the U.S. Navy who were separated from the service after 1885 and prior to February 1, 1994 and Officers of the U.S. Navy who were separated from service after 1902 and prior to February 1, 1994 are located at NARA's National Personnel Records Center, (Military Personnel Records), 1 Archives Drive, St. Louis, MO 63138-1002. To download an SF-180 please visit our website at the following: https://www.archives.gov/files/research/order/standard-form-180.pdf

For a complete copy of a personnel file, in Section II, on the line for "Other" (Specify), write "Complete copy of every page of personnel file - not an extract."

The OMPF is primarily an administrative record, containing information about the subject's service history such as: date and type of enlistment/appointment; duty stations and assignments; training, qualifications, performance; awards and decorations received; disciplinary actions; insurance; emergency data; administrative remarks; date and type of separation/discharge/retirement, and other personnel actions.

We hope this assists you with your research!
