Are there logs available for PERMIT SSN-594 in Guam 1974 - 1975 ?
mjweeks1 - SS Permit logs do not appear to be available from NARA at this time. (NARA staff will likely reply on that issue.) If your inquiry is agent orange related, we located two pieces of anecdotal evidence of USS Permit being in Guam and/or Guam territorial waters.
First, in the local Guamanian newspaper "Pacific Daily News", on page 8 of the December 12, 1975 issue, (see below), there is an article describing a mugging of a USS Permit crew member. Although not an official document, it is contemporaneous and should be acceptable as evidence of her presence on that date.
Second, in the US NAVAL INSTITUTE PROCEEDINGS magazine, of January 2022, Vol 148.1.1.1427 there is a brief description by Commander John M. McGrail USN (Retired) of an event that took place in 1974 as described in the clip below.
Again, while not official documents, if presented with a claim, they obligate VA to investigate and either accept or refute.
Good Luck

Thank you for posting on the History Hub!
This is in response to your inquiry to the National Archives regarding your request for Navy Deck Logs of the USS Permit (SSN-594) for the dates of 1974 - 1975. Our U.S. Navy post-1970 Deck Log series is partially closed.
The National Archives recently partnered with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to digitize the Vietnam-era log books in support of the Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act of 2019. While the VA completed scanning the U.S. Navy Deck Logs, the National Archives continues to process images from the VA in batches. We are working expeditiously to make the millions of resulting digital images available in the National Archives Catalog.
Some Deck Logs are already digitally available on the National Archives’ Online Catalog. You are welcome to check the Catalog for uploads. We encourage you to search for the name of the ship without using “USS” as a prefix or by the hull number. Our catalog is available at https://catalog.archives.gov/search-within/594258
The Deck Logs for the ships and for the years you have requested have not yet been added to the catalog, as post-1970 Deck Logs may contain instances of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and need to be reviewed and redacted first. If you limit your request to one or two months, we can review the requested months in response.
Please note: If you are requesting U.S Navy Deck Logs in relation to a VA Claim, the Department of Veterans Affairs may be able to provide the most direct assistance with information, as the VA maintains the original set of the U.S. Navy Deck Log digital images for the years 1956 through 1978.
The ship’s Command History may help limit the dates of your research. For access to post WWII US Naval Ship Command Histories, please write to, Naval History & Heritage Command, 805 Kidder Breese Street, SE, Washington Navy Yard, Washington, DC 20374-5060 or email at archives@navy.mil
These records are also available in our College Park, MD reading room. Please let us know if you or a representative is interested in visiting us and we can send you additional information on how to visit us. Another option would be to hire a private researcher. A list of private researchers who are familiar with National Archives facilities is available on our web site at www.archives.gov/research/hire-help/index.html
We invite you to continue the conversation with community members on History Hub, but please email us directly at archives2reference@nara.gov so that we can assist you further.
We hope this assists you with your research!
Sincerely,
