In regards to muster rolls, while the National Archives doesn’t have muster rolls for merchant ships as we do for Navy and Coast Guard ships, we do have Shipping Articles, 1939–1978 in the Records of the U.S. Coast Guard (Record Group 26), which consists of shipping articles filed with the U.S. Coast Guard by operators of American vessels at the end of a voyage. To inquire about these records, please contact the National Archives at Washington, DC - Textual Reference at Archives1reference@nara.gov.
Merchant ship logs were filed with the Coast Guard at the port where they finished their voyages. These in turn are archived at the closest National Archives regional research center (not counting Washington, DC or College Park, MD).
The National Archives at New York has the record series Official Logbooks of Merchant Vessels, 1942–1989 in Record Group 26 which includes logs of the Mormacport, Sea Pike, and Fort Christina. They also have Secret Logs for United States Merchant Vessels, 1942–1946 in the Records of Navy Installations Command, Navy Regions, Naval Districts, and Shore Establishments (Record Group 181) which include logs for the Mormacport and the Sea Pike. The National Archives at Philadelphia has logs of the Mormacport and the Fort Christina in Record Group 26, though most are post-World War II. They also have the Merchant Ship File of Mormacport in Record Group 181. Additionally, the National Archives at San Francisco has logs of the Sea Pike and Mormacport. The National Archives at Fort Worth, Texas and the National Archives at Riverside have additional logs of the Fort Christina. For more information about these records, please email each location at the email addresses listed on the linked web pages.
An additional source of information about World War II era merchant ships are the records of the Naval Armed Guard Service detachments assigned to these vessels. We searched the Armed Guard Files, 1934 - 1946 in the Records of the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (Record Group 38) and located the files Mormacport 04/10/42 - 04/11/46 Troop transport, Mormacwave 05/10/43 - 10/01/45 - Troop transport. (Ex. Sea Pike), and Fort Christina 02/06/45 - 10/09/45. We also checked our finding aids for the Armed Guard Logs, 1943 - 1945 in the Records of the Bureau of Naval Personnel (Record Group 24) and found listings for the Mormacport, Sea Pike, and Fort Christina. For more information about these non-digitized records, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference via email at Archives2reference@nara.gov.
Also, the Central Correspondence Files, 1936–1950 of the Records of the U.S. Maritime Commission (Record Group 178) include files on the 901-698 Mormacport (SS) (No. 218682 (Ex-City of Fairbury), 901-6649 Sea Pike (SS) (MC #267) Renamed Mormacwave, 901-15956 Fort Christina (SS) (MC #2405). Please note that the 901 files typically contain information about the acquisition and disposition of ships and other high level administrative matters rather than detail about crewmembers of individual voyages. Record Group 178 also has Cargo, Mail, and Passenger Reports, 1918–1946 which provides general information about the cargo, mail, and/or passengers carried by each voyage. Please note that these are typically aggregated numbers and do not list each individual person or piece of equipment on a ship. For more information about these non-digitized records, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference via email at Archives2reference@nara.gov. Because reference services for Record Group 178 is provided by the Civilian Reference Team while questions about the previously listed Record Group 24 and 38 records are answered by our Navy Reference Team, we suggest that you submit the civilian and navy questions as separate emails.
Brief entries on these ships are available on the Maritime Administration (MARAD) website at MORMACPORT, MORMACWAVE, and FORT CHRISTINA
Histories of the Mormacport and Sea Pike can be found in the publication Troopship of World War II.
We hope this assists you with your research!
Sincerely,
