Are Coast Guard ship/cutter names reused? How to find history?

How can I get information/pictures/history of a Coast Goard ship/cutter that was decommissioned in the early 1970's. When I google the cutter's name, I get a much older ship, with the same name, that was decommissioned around 1919. Are ship/cutter names reused?

The National Archives and Records Administration is the repository for the historical, noncurrent records of the U.S. Federal Government, we only house records that were produced/maintained by Federal agencies and programs. Records relating to the US Coast Guard Cutter/Vessels will most often be found in Record Group 26: Records of the US Coast Guard and later records —if it exists—may be dispersed among multiple research facilities and records series. For example records relating to US Coast Guard Logbooks from 1972 to the 1980s are located in our Regional Archives depending on the vessel's home port and location of station.

For photographs related to Coast Guard Cutter/vessels contact the National Archives Still Pictures Research room at: stillpix@nara.gov.

Lastly, for additional information relating to the history of Coast Guard Vessels and their naming practice we recommend starting with the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Historian's Office.
