Yorktown CV-10 Quartermaster deck logs

I’m searching for information on Yorktown’s Quartermaster deck logs. My aunt (mother’s sister) was married to a naval aviator who flew with VF-1 on board the Yorktown during operations around Saipan in 1944. He was killed on June 20th when another plane landed on top of him after he had landed successfully a minute or two earlier. His name was M.M. Tomme, Jr. and he was a Lieutenant, Junior Grade. Specifically I'm looking for the coordinates for his burial at sea.

  • Hi Ken. Sorry about your aunt's husband M.M. Tomme, Jr., May he RIP. So Sad. He's one of the reasons for today, Memorial Day.  My father was on the Yorktown CV-10 in the operations around Saipan in June 1944. My dad was on the deck of the Yorktown CV-10 Aircraft Carrier when this incident occurred and maybe the airplane caught on fire. Someone pulled my dad through a hatch. Thank God. My brother said that this was in a photo that was in a book he saw when he was boy captured this.  I had to figure out how to join this to write to you. I would like to find that book and picture.

    Best wishes,

    Pat
