Lack of DFC backup for WWII

My father had a DFC sent home with his personal effects after being shot down on his 31st mission during WWII which was the Memmingen mission of July 18, 1944. This award never showed up on his DD214 later. Is there a way to determine if it was actually awarded to him? He never wore the ribbon later because of this lack of backup.  I wonder if there is a list of names in the squadron files for this.

Thank you for posting your question to History Hub!

Lists of award citations for members of a unit are found in the unit's General Orders, but these orders are difficult to navigate unless you have the General Order number, the date of the order, and the specific awarding unit/department.  Therefore, we recommend that you contact the National Personnel Records Center to begin your search.  For Air Force (including Army Air Corps), Army, and Navy personnel, NARA's National Personnel Records Center will verify the awards to which a veteran is entitled and forward the request with the verification to the appropriate service department for issuance of the medals.  For requesting medals and awards, please use eVetRecs on our web site at http://www.archives.gov/veterans/evetrecs/ or use the attached SF 180 and send the form to NARA's Military Personnel Records, National Personnel Records Center, 1 Archives Drive, St. Louis, MO  63138-1002.  Provide as much information as possible in Section II under "other."
Please note: Army Air Force General Orders are in the custody of the National Archives at St. Louis.  These records are arranged by unit designation, year, and general order number (GO#), so please provide that citation or as much information as possible when you submit your request to St. Louis via email at stl.archives@nara.gov.  The research room at the National Archives at St. Louis is open by appointment only.  If you would like to schedule a virtual consultation prior to an onsite visit, please email stlarr.archives@nara.gov.
We invite you to continue the conversation with community members on History Hub, but should you have follow up questions for the staff at Archives II, please email us at archives2reference@nara.gov so that we can assist you further.

We hope this assists you with your research!

    Sincerely,

Textual Reference Archives II Branch (RR2RR)

  • Thank you.  I do have most of the info except for General Orders but I have dates and squadrons and missions so I will take your suggestion for further requests.
