    The National Archives holds Compiled Military Service Records for Union soldiers.

    Via the National Park Service website of Civil War Soldiers & Sailors Index, we were able to identify a CMSR pertaining to Private William Norris, Company D, 13th Maryland Infantry.

    You may order CMSRs at eservices.archives.gov by filling out and submitting NATF Form 86.

    In addition to the CMSRs pertaining to Private William Norris, Co. D, 13th MD Infantry, the National Archives in Washington, DC/Archives 1 Reference Branch (RR1R) has identified the following records:

    *Record Group 94: Records of the Adjutant General's Office, Entry 518: Union Staff Officer's Files, Acting Assistant Surgeon William H. Norris, Box # 77
    *Record Group 94: Records of the Adjutant General's Office, Entry 561: Medical Officer's Files, W. H. Norris (1861-1865), Box # 425

    There are currently three options for obtaining access and copies of records in our holdings, as it more specifically relates to the Union Staff Officer's Files and the Medical Officer's Files:

    1) You can visit the National Archives in Washington, DC, in person. Currently, research at NARA is by appointment or on a walk-in basis. For information about scheduling a research appointment, please see our website at https://www.archives.gov/dc.
    2) You can request a price quote for the Union Staff Officer's Files and the Medical Officer's Files.
