My dad was an American who served in USAF between 1951-1967. I have his service records after requesting them from the National Archives. How do I get a photograph of him and how do I obtain his service medals. The records I have of medal etc are hard to read, and how do I know if he served in the Vietnam War. Many thanks

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

The "official" photographs of individuals are not considered to be permanent federal records by the respective military services and are not retained in a separate collection by the service. If the photograph you are seeking still exists, it will most likely be found in the individual's Official Military Personnel File (OMPF). However, there is no guarantee the photograph will be present.

For former Air Force (including Army Air Corps) personnel, NARA's National Personnel Records Center will verify the awards to which a veteran is entitled and forward the request with the verification to the appropriate Air Force department for issuance of the medals.  For requesting verification of medals and awards, please use eVetRecs on NARA’s website at Request Military Service Records or complete a GSA Standard Form 180 and send it to NARA's Military Personnel Records, National Personnel Records Center, 1 Archives Drive, St. Louis, MO  63138-1002.  Provide as much information as possible in Section II under "other."

We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
