Civil War Draft records

How do I request the detailed records for a person who was registered during the Civil War draft in 1863?  I do not believe he served.  I see that the request document forms on the site are more specific to people who actually served, not just registered for the draft.  I have the compiled draft registration record from Ancestry, but want to obtain the underlying records.  Thank you!

Thank you for posting your question on History Hub!

The information you obtained online pertaining to Record Group 110: Records of the Office of the Provost Marshal General, Entry 172: Consolidated Lists of Civil War Draft Registration Records, 1863-1865 is the only information available.

Essentially, the principal Union Civil War draft records in the custody of the National Archives, the consolidated enrollment lists, provide the following information about the men enrolled for the draft: Name and Place of Residence; Age as of July 1, 1863; Race; Occupation; Marital Status; State, Territory or Country of Birth; Previous Military Service; and Remarks.

You have already accessed these records online and there are no additional records.

We hope this assists you with your research!

  • Thank you.  Are you saying that the underlying records from which the consolidated enrollment lists were created no longer exist?
