Looking for records on my grandfather.

He was stationed in Japan during WW2. I think his records were in the archive fire. He was a photographer. He also married a Japanese woman and died during childbirth. The woman's sister adopted the baby and my grandfather came back to Mississippi.

Thank you for posting your question on History Hub!

If you have not already done so we suggest that you you request a copy of your Grandfather's Official Military Personnel File (OMPF). OMPFs and individual medical reports for those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces and who were separated from the service before 1960 are in the custody of NARA's National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) in St. Louis. In many cases where Army and Air Force personnel records were destroyed in the 1973 fire, proof of service can be provided from other records such as morning reports, payrolls, and military orders, and a certificate of military service will be issued. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard OMPFs were not affected by the fire. Please complete a GSA Standard Form 180 and mail it to NARA's National Personnel Records Center, (Military Personnel Records), 1 Archives Drive, St. Louis, MO  63138-1002. Veterans and next of kin of deceased veterans also may use eVetRecs to request records. See eVetRecs Help for instructions. For more information see Official Military Personnel Files (OMPF), Archival Records Requests.

Archival OMPFs may also be requested by visiting the Archival Research Room at the National Archives at St. Louis. Please see the linked web pages for more information. Please email stlarr.archives@nara.gov for further assistance prior to making an appointment.

The Textual Reference Archives II Branch (RR2RR) has custody of records related to military units in World War II. If you are interested in these records and able to identify which branch of the military your grandfather served with as well as his specific unit and dates of service we will gladly review our records for you and let you know what is available. We do not have a name index to these records. If you do not know this information it may be found within his OMPF. For more information about military records in our custody please contact us at archives2reference@nara.gov

We invite you to continue the conversation with community members on History Hub, but should you have follow up questions for the staff at Archives II, please email us at archives2reference@nara.gov so that we can assist you further.

We hope this assists you with your research!
