Thank you for posting your question on History Hub!

For information on Clarence Oliver Olden and his military service we suggest that you request a copy of his Official Military Personnel File (OMPF). OMPFs and individual medical reports for those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces and who were separated from the service before 1960 are in the custody of NARA's National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) in St. Louis. In many cases where Army and Air Force personnel records were destroyed in the 1973 fire, proof of service can be provided from other records such as morning reports, payrolls, and military orders, and a certificate of military service will be issued. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard OMPFs were not affected by the fire. Please complete a GSA Standard Form 180 and mail it to NARA's National Personnel Records Center, (Military Personnel Records), 1 Archives Drive, St. Louis, MO  63138-1002. Veterans and next of kin of deceased veterans also may use eVetRecs to request records. See eVetRecs Help for instructions. For more information see Official Military Personnel Files (OMPF), Archival Records Requests.

Archival OMPFs may also be requested by visiting the Archival Research Room at the National Archives at St. Louis. Please see the linked web pages for more information.  Please email stlarr.archives@nara.gov for further assistance prior to making an appointment.

We invite you to continue the conversation with community members on History Hub, but should you have follow up questions for the staff at Archives II, please email us at archives2reference@nara.gov so that we can assist you further.

We hope this assists you with your research!

    Sincerely,

Textual Reference Archives II Branch (RR2RR)

  • I found the same record on Fold3.com. Do you know anything else about his service?

Remember that registering for the draft doesn't necessarily mean that he actually served (although I assume if he didn't serve, you'd probably know it). He might have been medically disqualified, for example. Just want to set expectations.

I also notice on Findagrave that there's a notation that his grave was "unmarked," although there's a marker on it now. That soon after World War II, I would think that the family would have gotten a marker form the VA (if the notation on Findagrave was correct, since there's a photo of a marker stone).

Do you have a photo of him in uniform? If you posted it, someone might be able to tell you something about his service by looking at it.
