Looking for information on uncle killed in World War 2. His name was James Cahill Jones. From Wichita, Kansas.
Hi pamburgard
If you haven't requested his records you should do so to learn more about him, although the soldier's picture wasn't an official part of the record so it may or may not be there The Archive staff will usually respond with info on requesting records, or see here Official Military Personnel Files (OMPF), Archival Records Requests.
- You should also request your uncle’s Individual Deceased Personnel File (IDPF). IDPFs from 1940- 1976 for personnel with surnames that begin with A-L are in the custody of the National Archives at St. Louis (RL-SL), P.O. Box 38757, St. Louis, MO 63138-1002. For access to these records, please contact RL-SL via email at stl.archives@nara.gov.
- I decided to look in the period newspapers to see if I could find his picture (without success) but found these mentions
The Newkirk Herald Journal OK) Feb 16 1945 p 1
The Wichita Beacon (KS) Aug 26 1945 p 5
...
- I wasn't sure what class at Wichita University (now Wichita State University) he was in.I did find a Cahill Jones listed in the 1941-43 yearbooks but wasn't sure this was him.Would he have gone by Cahill Jones? If so there are multiple images of him. Let me know.

Thank you so much for this information!! Yes, my uncle went by Cahill Jones. I would be so grateful if you could send images.

- He is also listed on the "Student Forum" page cropped the photo from there

I can’t thank you enough for this information about my uncle. He was my mother’s brother. He was not talked about much when I was growing up. I think too painful for the family. He should not be forgotten as he gave his young life for our freedom. Thank you for doing this research. It means a great deal!
I'm so happy I could help! I'm not usually as lucky to find all the yearbooks available & often have to suggest people look at local library or VFW or American Legion or or historical society to see if they commemorated local soldiers lost in the War.
This is a link to his burial site https://www.abmc.gov/decedent-search/jones%3Djames-27
- it gives you his service # & that he was with the 11th Inf 5th Division which would be helpful for requesting his records
5th Division: http://www.societyofthefifthdivision.com/WWII/WW-II.htm
- If you want to learn more about his experiiences, there are some resources at the Army Heritage center Carlisle PA https://ahec.armywarcollege.edu/ - Ask a Question: https://usawc.libanswers.com/
- among the resources re: the 11th Infantry, you'll see there is a memoir wriiten by a soldier in the 11th Infantry. Karl Clarkson - you may want to inquire whether you can get a copy of that
- This has some brief info re: the actions of Jan 1945 when your uncle was killed. https://battleofthebulge.org/2017/06/13/5th-infds-%E2%80%A8sauer-river-crossing-january-18-1945/ His IDPF file (I sent info in my 1st response) may have more info on his death
So happy to know his sacrifice will not be forgotten Good luck with your research

I can’t believe my good fortune to find this site. You have been wonderful with your research and detailed information. I can’t thank you enough!!

Found this page on your uncle - not sure where they got the picture - its a Dutch group that tries to find info on the soldiers [don't know anything about the group so don't share any info you aren't comfortable with)
Thank you for posting your question on History Hub!
The Still Picture Branch has many candid photos of U.S. Military personnel but in most of them, there is no identification of the people shown. We have name indexes for the Army and Navy, filed by the last name that are digitized within our online catalog.
You can find the Army index as 111-PX: Index to Personalities in the U.S. Army Signal Corps Photographic Files in our catalog here: catalog.archives.gov/.../530686. A tutorial on how to use the Army, WWII and Korea personality index can be found at: historyhub.history.gov/.../researching-personalities-in-u-s-army-photographs.
You can find the Navy index as 80-GX: Index to Photographs of Personalities in the General Photographic File of the Department of Navy. A tutorial on how to use the Navy WWII personality index can be found at: historyhub.history.gov/.../how-to-search-still-photographs-for-world-war-ii-navy-personalities.
The Marine Corps index, 127-PX: Indexes to Photographs of Marine Corps and Noted Civilian Personalities, has not been digitized. If your relative was in the Marine Corps, please contact stillpix@nara.gov with his full name, branch, and dates of service, and a staff member will search for you.
Please note that according to the Military, graduates’ formal photos, both individual and group, were taken by private local commercial photographers and offered for sale at the time taken. Unfortunately those items never became part of official military records nor were they retained by the commercial photographers responsible for shooting the photos. If we do not find an entry in the index, that indicates that we do not have identifiable photographs for the person you are searching for.
We invite you to continue the conversation with community members on History Hub, but should you have follow up questions for the staff at Archives II, please email us at stillpix@nara.gov so that we can assist you further.
We hope this assists you with your research!
Sincerely,
Special Media Division (RRS)
