Looking for information on John Edward Socia, killed in 1918 in France

John Edward Socia was born September 22, 1892 & died in France in 1918. He was sent back to Pine Bluff, Arkansas & is buried there  in Bellwood Cemetery. I am looking for the correct date of death.

  • I did see that, but also saw an article from the Pine Bluff newspaper saying he died on November 10, 1918, just  before the Armistice Treaty was signed. It stated his body had arrived home for burial. Thank you for answering though.

  • I can rule out him dying in November 1918, as he appeared in the published casualty lists prior to that.  See the third column.

Please note that the date his name appeared in the newspaper would not be his date of death, as there would have been a delay between his death and the new being published in newspapers, to allow for his next of kin family to be directly notified first,

  • Also, here's some things on Ancestry that don't answer you question but may be of interest:

Children
  • Thank you so much for this information. I am almost 60 years old & was never told about him. He was my great uncle. I just found out about him a couple of weeks ago.

  • You're welcome!   I did a bit more digging and found some more things:

Here's a copy of the VA Index card mentioned by the National Archives.

Like they said, your best bet is to request the burial case files and the XC files from the National Archives at St. Louis.

Unfortunately there's a high chance that his OMPF was lost in the fire, but you never know until you request it, so I'd suggest doing so.  Just be aware that there can be a long wait on those, even when they find it.

I also managed to get the copies of the passenger lists I was having troubles with earlier.

Something else you should do is contact the Arkansas State Archives, because they have records for him as well. This is their index listing for him.
