Civil War Records- McMullen

The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System (CWSS) is a database containing information about the men who served in the Union and Confederate armies during the Civil War. Other information on the site includes histories of Union and Confederate regiments, links to descriptions of significant battles, and selected lists of prisoner-of-war records and cemetery records, which will be amended over time. The CWSS is a cooperative effort between the National Park Service and several public and private partners whose goal is to increase Americans' understanding of this decisive era in American history by making information about it widely accessible. We searched the CWSS and located 5 entries for persons named John McMullen serving in Wisconsin units.

We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the General Index to Civil War and Later Pension Files, ca. 1949 - ca. 1949 in the Records of the Department of Veterans Affairs (Record Group 15) that includes pension index cards for John B W McMullen, formerly of Company D, 3rd Wisconsin Infantry, which indexes a widow pension application by his spouse Chloe E McMullen in 1870, and a minor pension application in 1876.  This date of the widow application suggests that John B W McMullen passed away during or before 1870. We are attaching the cards to the end of our response. The complete pension files to which these are index cards have not been digitized and are not available online.

We then located the series Indexes to the Carded Records of Soldiers Who Served in Volunteer Organizations During the Civil War in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office, 1762 - 1917 (Record Group 94) that includes an index card for  [Wisconsin] McMullen, John B - 3rd Infantry, Company D. The index card indicates that there should be a Compiled Military Service Records (CMSR) for him in the series Carded Records Showing Military Service of Soldiers Who Fought in Volunteer Organizations During the American Civil War in the Record Group 94. Unfortunately, the records for most Wisconsin Volunteers have not been microfilmed or digitized.

To order service and pension records that have not already been digitized, please fill out a NATF Form 86 for the service records and a NATF Form 85 for the pension records and mail the completed forms to the address listed on the form or submit your order via eservices.archives.gov. Next, we located the series Carded Medical Records of Volunteer Soldiers in the Mexican and Civil Wars, 1846 - 1865 in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office, 1762 - 1917 (Record Group 94) that may have a file for John B. McMullen if he received medical treatment while in service. We also located Regimental and Company Books of Civil War Volunteer Union Organizations, 1861 - 1867 in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office, 1762 - 1917 (Record Group 94) that includes Regimental and Company Books of the 3rd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment.
