How do I find Vietnam war records?

My wife's cousin, Robert (Bob) William Brede, was a Combat Tracker dog handler in the army. He was born 10-26-1943 to Gustave and Alma Brede in Bertha-Hewitt, Minnesota. He died along with his dog Bodie on 11-16-1967 when the Cu Chi base camp where he was stationed was attacked. He was awarded the Brown Star, Purple Heart, National Defense, Vietnam Service & Vietnam Campaign medals.

Robert William Brede: CBT Tracker team 2, HCC. 2ND BN, 27th INF Div, US ARV.

This is all we know about his service in Vietnam.

Thank you,

Steve Miller

  • Dear Stephen Miller,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

We searched NARA’s Access to Archival Databases (AAD) and located the Records with Unit Information on Military Personnel Who Died During the Vietnam War database in the Richard Coffelt, Richard Arnold, and David Argabright Collection (COFF) that includes a file pertaining to Robert William Brede. We also located an entry for Robert William Brede in the Vietnam Conflict Extract Data File of the Defense Casualty Analysis System (DCAS) Extract Files in the Records of the Office of the Secretary of Defense (Record Group 330). Please note that he was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC), 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division.

We suggest that you request a copy of his Official Military Personnel File (OMPF). Official Military Personnel Files (OMPFs) and individual medical reports for those who served in the U.S. Army after 1959 and before October 16, 1992 are in the custody of NARA's National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) in St. Louis. Please complete a GSA Standard Form 180 and mail it to NARA's National Personnel Records Center, (Military Personnel Records), 1 Archives Drive, St. Louis, MO  63138-1002. Veterans and next of kin of deceased veterans also may use eVetRecs to request records. See eVetRecs Help for instructions. Certain information in the records is not available to the general public without the written consent of the next of kin the deceased veteran. For more information see Request Military Service Records.

Please be aware that NPRC is prioritizing the requests for separation documents needed by veterans and their dependents to prove eligibility for a variety of benefits. NPRC expects to eliminate this portion of the backlog by fall 2022, and restore their pre-pandemic response times of under ten days for these requests later this fall. It will take considerably longer to eliminate the backlog on other types of requests, such as genealogical requests for complete copies of records. For more information, please refer to Onsite Operations at the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis.

You may also request a copy of his Individual Deceased Personnel File (IDPF). IDPFs from 1940-1976 for U.S. Army personnel with surnames that begin with A-L are in the custody of the National Archives at St. Louis (RL-SL). For more information about these records, please contact RL-SL via email at stl.archives@nara.gov.

We searched the National Archives Catalog and located a series titled Infantry Unit Records, 1965 - ca. 1973 in the Records of the U.S. Forces in Southeast Asia (Record Group 472) that includes general orders and daily journals of the 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment for 1967. For more information about these non-digitized records, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) at archives2reference@nara.gov.

You may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgment as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RL-SL and RDT2. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience as we balance mission-critical work and the safety of our staff during the pandemic. Please check NARA’s web page about COVID-19 updates for the latest information.

We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your family research!
