Thank you for posting your request on History Hub.

Operational records of Army units in Vietnam often are among series in the Records of the United States Forces in Southeast Asia, 1950-1976 (Record Grouyp 472).  Descriptions of such series are available in our online Catalog.  See https://catalog.archives.gov/.  Although copies of records typically are not available online, the descriptions should provide a overview of what records are available.  For example, the series composed of records of infantry units (namely, A1 Entry 1656) is described at https://catalog.archives.gov/id/1224999.  Records of the 5-46th are in Boxes 672-715, with the bulk of them consisting of consolidated S-2/S-3 daily journals.  If available, records of companies are included in the battalion records.  Additional series or records of the AMERICAL and its brigades similarly are available.

We are unaware of a comprehensive list of casualties from Vietnam.  Morning Reports potentially can provide some information, but unlikely if treatment was in the field.  Information on those who fell in Southeast Asia, however, is available in the Coffelt Database.  We have a version in our Access to Archival Databases (AAD) via the link “Casualties” at https://aad.archives.gov/aad/.  The Coffelt Group also maintains a version with a different interface.

As noted in previous correspondence, if you have additional questions about specific records in our custody, please email us at archives2reference@nara.gov so that we can assist you further.  We also invite you to continue the conversation with community members on History Hub.

    Sincerely,

Textual Reference Archives II Branch (RR2RR)
