Thank you for posting your question to the History Hub!
Well of course we would need to know more specific information about your ancestor's military service during the Civil War, in particular the regiment in which he served. While the National Archives does not have compiled or published unit histories for state volunteer regiments, there are other sources available that would be helpful. National Archives Microfilm Publication M594, Compiled Records Showing Service of Military Units in Volunteer Union Organizations and M861, Compiled Records Showing Service of Military Units in Confederate Organizations (you did not mention which side he served) is the closest record we have showing the activities of regiments during the war. For each regiment the records are organized by company, showing where they were stationed from month to month, and containing notations of notable actions including marches, skirmishes or battles. Otherwise, you can also find service summaries for a specific regiment in the National Park Service's Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System database at https://www.nps.gov/civilwar/soldiers-and-sailors-database.htm. The summaries usually provide a list of campaigns or battles with additional hot links to descriptions of the actions.
We hope this information assists you with your research!
Sincerely,
Archives 1 Reference Branch
