WWII Navy ship Amsterdam Fall 1945:Mission of small group who want ashore near Kyushu during typhoon?

My uncle was a signal man in the navy in WWII on the CL101 ship Amsterdam off coast of Japan. He remembers that around Sept. 1945 he volunteered to go ashore, which was a significant distance from the ship,  which he did with 4 or 5 others in a small boat which was not able to communicate with the Amsterdam.  He remembers that the sea was or became very rough due to a typhoon.  He remembers once on shore walking up some stairs and that he became or had become separated from the rest of the small contingent.  He believes he was in Kyushu and woke up very hungry in a building.  He was picked up by a US shore patrol and returned to the ship. He would like to know what was the mission of this small group? He does not remember what he volunteered for...
