Civil war symbols mustard roll

Hi!

My mother is doing genealogy work. She's focused on who we think is our immigrant ancestor, and is using Civil War military documents to trace the movements of the ancestor in question. She's currently going through Union Mustard Rolls, and keeps coming across this symbol: a horizontal line with an x through it, with 6 dots filling the spaces in between each line. I tried Google image searching, but all that came up was Celtic protection runes, which were close in design, but not the same thing. If anyone knows what I mean or can answer as to what it might be, I'd love to hear from you!

Thank you for posting your question to the History Hub!
We checked the Records of the Adjutant General's Office (Record Group 94) but do not find any specifc information pertaining to the use of symbols or other abbreviations on military muster rolls. It might be necessary for us to see an example of the symbol within the context of the muster roll to possibly decipher it. If you are able to capture a digital image of the symbol we would recommend you send it to the Archives 1 Reference Branch (RR1R) at archives1reference@nara.gov with as much information as possible about the muster roll itself.
We hope this suggestion assists you with your research!
