WWII enlistment process in Iowa

In general, the Army used standardized practices for the enlistment and/or induction processes across the U.S. The U.S. Army Center of Military History provides a number of online publications like The Personnel Replacement System in the United States Army and The History of Military Mobilization in the United States Army, 1775-1945 that may provide some relevant information about the process. We suggest that you contact them or the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center for further assistance. You may also wish to search their websites for additional information and resources.

There are also a number of online resources like the Army publication Selective Service: Before the All-Volunteer Force and the National World War II Museum web page  Training the American GI that might provide some insight. 

Next, there may also be some relevant information in the National Archives’ Preliminary Inventory Number 27: Records of the Selective Service System 1940-1947. This preliminary inventory (PI) provides an overview of the World War II-era Selective Service records in NARA’s custody, and the introduction to the inventory contains some historical background information as well.

Beyond this, you will likely need to consult with state, county, and/or local organizations in order to learn more about the specific experiences of individuals who enlisted in the Army in Iowa, like the State Historical Society of Iowa or the Iowa Veterans Remembrance Project |. You may also find some useful information in historical newspapers, such as those available from the Digital Archives of Iowa City Public Library or Iowa: Digitized Newspapers « Chronicling America « Library of Congress.
