WWII_CCPWE19 (Camp, Normandy) & German POW

Hello
I'm looking for any information on an American German prison camp in Normandy, CCPWE19, which housed 100,000 German soldiers between June 1944 and February 1946: camp management, people who were assigned to it (staff, guards, stewards) and who were kept there (German soldiers). We have the names of the main people in charge, starting with Col. W. J. Kennedy, but we're looking to supplement what we know with American archives, and to find out about other profiles (guards, particularly black GIs, German prisoners).
Can you tell me what military, diplomatic (US embassy in France), photographic, cartographic or other documents the NARA might have?
Could you also tell me about other archives I could contact for this research? I thought of the Eisenhower Library, but perhaps there are other federal archives?
What associations or private archives could I also contact?

Thank you very much for your help. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require any further information.

Best regards,   Fabien Théofilakis

  • Hi Fabian,

i just saw your post and might be able to help. My great uncle served in that camp. His name was Capt. Lewis Hackney and was in charge of Area C. When he passed away years ago my father inherited a book about the camp. He didn’t have any information about it but it appears to be a hand made book that details the growth of CCPWE 19. It looks to have been commissioned by the Army and some of the art inside might have been done by German prisoners. We don’t know how many exist but think each of the officers may have received one. I uploaded images of it here.   Http://photos.app.goo.gl/QM7aWJkoeRCxYWT78

Hope it helps. If I can help in any way please let me know. Good luck.

  • Dear Brandon,

I'd like to come back to you regarding our last exchanges and your copy of the book.

Indeed, the museum project is progressing and we are looking to complete the collections that will be exhibited.

I would like to know if we could present this work in the exhibition on loan to the museum?

I'd be delighted to discuss this with you.

    Best regards,

    Fabien
