Are there Civil War Pension Payment Cards for payments before 1907?

The resource below is helpful, but my pensioner widow didn't live to 1907.  Are there records for pre-1907 pension payments?  I don't find these in the widow's pension application file.

Record Group 15 Records of the Veterans Administration, Microfilm publication M850 Veterans Administration Pension Payment Cards, 1907-1933

I can't seem to paste the pension index card here but you can see it here: https://www.fold3.com/image/5668257/sullivan-micheal-civil-war-pensions-index

This card does not list the widow's death date.

    - You can access Mary Sullivan's actual Pension record on Fold3 or on the Archives site: https://catalog.archives.gov/id/99414462

If you have a subscription to Fold-3 you can view the Pension record for Michael's widow  either by search or  using Browse

    - Select Browse at the top -then on LEFT side of page select USA - Conflict:Civil War (Union) -

    - Under Publications - the 3rd one down is "Civil War Widow's Pensions" - click on that

    - This will open a list of States - click on "New York"

    - This will open list of Branch of Service - click on "Infantry"

    - Scroll down to Regiment 69 - then to Company K

-- Scroll down to  his name & click on it & you can view the 30 images in the pension

    - Page/Image #20 lists Mary was last paid Dec 4 1888 & was dropped due to her death but surprisingly doesn't record her date of death but assume sometime in Dec 1888 or early 1889 & Image/Page #25 seems to indicate the pension was transferred over the years to Wash DC - back to NYC & then back to Wash DC in 1877

    -  This is a link to records relating to the 69th NY available at the Archives.  On LEFT side of page if you click "Available To Access Online" it will bring up records that are digitized - https://catalog.archives.gov/search?page=1&q=%2269th%20new%20york%20Infantry%22

    - Roster 69th NY  - https://dmna.ny.gov/historic/reghist/civil/rosters/Infantry/69th_Infantry_CW_Roster.pdf

Hope that helps.  Good luck with your research

  • Thank you.

    I have the pensions.

At some point Mary returned to Ireland.  The 1883 List of Pensioners shows her receiving her Widow's Pension (119143) in Kenmare, Ireland and her pension file includes her being dropped from the pension roll due to death (death date, location not provided). She was last paid 4 Dec 1888.

I was hoping the Pension Payments might indicate when she moved but I see now that the Pension Payment Cards only have the date, not the location.

I wonder if her pension certificate pages (24-25) from the pension file suggest when Mary moved to Ireland?

Of possible significance is that a duplicate pension certificate was issued based on the Oath of Identity provided by Donald O'Brien of NYC on 1873.12.08

    Oath of Identity (p. 26)

    TIA

  • Hi Zoe

I have looked at a lot of pension records & was a little surprised I could not find some notation of her death date in the record.  Do you know if Mary stayed in Ireland? Was she there a significant time that you believe her Pension Payments were sent there? I am unsure of what ultimate questions you are trying to answer? Mary's date of death?  Place of death? Place of burial?  When she left for Ireland?  I would state what exactly what you are looking for.

That said, now that I have a better sense of what you know & why you were asking about payments Idid a quick search & found these

    https://www.archives.gov/research/guide-fed-records/groups/015.html

    15.2.3 Financial records

Pension agency payment books, 1805-1909, with a card index.

    https://www.archives.gov/research/guide-fed-records/groups/217.html

RG 217, Records of the Accounting Officers of the Treasury.

217.4.4 Records of the Army Pension Division

Textual Records: Letters sent, 1880-94. Letters received, 1819- 42. Laws, regulations, and decisions, 1854-82. Registers of pension accounts and payments, 1811-94.

    - You need someone with some expertise in Pension Records like Claire Prechtel-Kluskens who wrote this great  article "Follow the Money" https://www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/2008/winter/follow-money.html  - Although this is about Rev War Pensions, if you read the aricle it mentions resources relating to pensions & finances - some of which could apply to CW Pensions

    - You have the Pension Record, you know from 1883 Pension List that she rec'd her pension in Kenmare, Co Kerry Ireland  From the pension record you know she was dealing with pension Agency in NY & Wash. DC (but the latest would be the 1883 List record of Ireland) & thementionin the Pension that Mary was last paid Dec 4 1888 & then dropped due to death.

    - I would post what specifically you are trying to learn & you may need to contact the Textual Reference Dept directly.

Hopefully someone with expertise in Pension Records will respond further

    Good Luck

  • Thank you P.McG.

I appreciate your expertise - I am new to pension files.

    Thank you for the links!

I would like to know when Mary returned to Ireland.

My question is do the notations on the pension certificate address when she started receiving her pension payments in Ireland?

The pension certificate had the following notations relating to where the pension was sent.

    • 1868 certificate issued, payments sent to New York City
    • 1871 pension payments transferred to Washington DC
    • 1874 pension payments transferred to New York City
    • 1883 "List of Pensioners" notes Mary Sullivan receiving her pension in Kenmare, Ireland
    • 1886 pension payments transferred to "DC ExOrd 1877"
    • 1888 last payment due to death of pensioner

I wonder if the 1886 note "DC ExOrd 1877" means they starting sending her pension payments to Ireland then and what 1877 means? Does the pension office reissue payments that you missed because you moved several years before?

    Thanks again
