I would like to find the dates of service and rank of my Gt, Gt, Gt, Grandfather George Lantz. He served with 2nd Infantry Regiment New Jersey. I do know they were in many battles including Golden's Farm, VA., Charles City Cross Roads, VA., 2nd Bull Run, VA., and on 3 July 1863 at Gettysburg, PA.

Do you have any other information on your relative, for instance date of birth, death, burial place,where he was born, where he lived, his wife's name and brothers or sisters. Any of those might help.

HI Ellen, the NPS website on the Civil War had the following information about a George G. Lantz (see below). Also the New Jersey Department of State has a database of Civil War records. The information in the table below is from their website.
And It looks as though you might be able to request records, if this is the correct George Lantz; although it is unclear if there is more information than what is in the table below There is also information about the 2nd Regiment. The Second Regiment was organized under authority of General Orders, No. 15, War Department, Adjutant General's Office, Washington, D. C., May 4th, 1861. The Regiment was fully organized, equipped and officered by the 18th day of May, and on the 26th day of the same month was duly mustered into the service of the United States, for three years, at Camp Olden, Trenton, N. J., by Major Theodore T. S. Laidley, U. S. Army. It left the State, June 28th, 1861, with a full complement of men. Officers, 38; Non-Commissioned Officers and Privates, 1,006. Total, 1,044. Under the provisions of General Orders, No. 191, War Department, Adjutant General's Office, Washington, D. C., June 25th, 1863, numbers re-enlisted in the field, for three years or during the war; those who did not re-enlist were mustered out at expiration of service, at Newark, N. J., by Joseph M. Locke, Captain 14th Infantry, U. S. Army, June 21, 1864 - while those whose term of service did not expire with the Regiment, and those who had re-enlisted, were temporarily assigned to duty with the 15th Regiment, under orders issued May 29th, 1864, and so remained until the 20th of December, 1864, when they were consolidated into what was known as Co. A, 2d Batt., and so remained until the early part of 1865, when the Regiment was re-organized and fully completed by the forwarding of large numbers of recruits, substitutes and drafted men, and the raising of a new Company, (B) which was mustered into service, at Trenton, N. J., April 11, 1865, for one year, by James W. Long, Captain Second Infantry, U. S. Army, and continued its organization until its muster out at Hall's Hill, Va., July 11, 1865, by A. M. Tyler, Major and Assistant Commissary of Musters, First Division, Provisional Corps, Army of the Potomac, in compliance with orders from War Department, Adjutant General's Office, Washington, D. C., July 7, 1865.
This Regiment constituted one of the Four Regiments composing what was generally known as the First Brigade, New Jersey Volunteers, and was first attached to General Runyon's Division of Reserves, (Militia) at the Battle of Bull Run, Va., July 21, 1861; then to the First Brigade, (Kearny's) Franklin's Division; afterward to the First Brigade, First Division, First Army Corps, then to the First Brigade, First Division, Sixth Army Corps, and at the close of the war was assigned to what was known as the Provisional Corps, Army of the Potomac.

We searched the National Park Service’s Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System (CWSS) and located an entry for Lantz, George G. of the 2nd Regiment, New Jersey Infantry.
We also searched the National Archives Catalog and located the series Carded Records Showing Military Service of Soldiers Who Fought in Volunteer Organizations During the American Civil War in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office, 1762 - 1917 (Record Group 94) that may contain a service record for George G. Lantz of the 2nd Regiment, New Jersey Infantry. While some service records in this series have been digitized and can be viewed online through the Catalog, his record is not yet available online. There may also be a pension record for him which is not available online.
