Draft registration card, which I suspect you have seen.
However, there is no record of him in the 3 January 1944 roster of H Company, 179th, nor in the 29 June 1945 Division Roster of the 45th Infantry Division. Therefore, I would suggest you contact the NPRC, St. Louis, and ask if his OMPF survived the 1973 fire. If it did, it should contain information on any awards given to him.

Found this in the 27 January 1944 issue of the Pauls Valley Democrat.
LT Dezes was Corps of Engineers, casting doubt on Hershel's involvement with the 179th after 1941.
