Looking for information on S/Sgt. Arlie Shaneyfelt service in WWII

I am looking for any information on my Great Uncle's service in WWII. Arlie Shaneyfelt of the 301st BG 352 Squadron. Interested in the planes he would have flown in as well as any missions he flew. I have found some information on the medals he was awarded but can't find him in other databases to see what the medals were for. General Order 54: AM Air Medal issued by the 12th Air Force; GO 14: AM/1OLC Air Medal Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster issued by the 12th Air Force; GO 9002: AM 2OLC Air Medal Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster issued by the 12th Air Force; GO 64: AM/1OLC Air Medal Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster issued by the 12th Air Force; GO 83: AM/5OLC Air Medal Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster Silver Oak Leaf Clusters=5 OLCs issued by the 12th Air Force. Any help pointing me in the direction of finding more information would be greatly appreciated.

  • Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

We suggest that you review the National Personnel Record Center (NPRC) web page Military Awards and Decorations | National Archives for information about verification of military awards.

Army Air Force General Orders are in the custody of the National Archives at St. Louis. Plus, microfilmed copies of Air Force Individual Flight Records have recently been accessioned by the National Archives, St. Louis (RRPO) and are open to the public for the years 1911-1958. The information you are seeking might be included in these records. Please contact RRPO at stl.archives@nara.gov

If you have not done so already, we also suggest that you request a copy of his Official Military Personnel File (OMPF). OMPFs and individual medical reports for those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces during World War II and separated from the service more than 62 years ago are in the custody of the National Archives at St. Louis. In many cases where Army and Army Air Corps personnel records were destroyed in the 1973 fire, proof of service can be provided from other records such as morning reports, payrolls, and military orders, and a certificate of military service will be issued. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard OMPFs were not affected by the fire. Please complete a GSA Standard Form 180 and mail it to NARA's National Personnel Records Center, (Military Personnel Records), 1 Archives Drive, St. Louis, MO  63138-1002.

In Section 1, Item 1, where it asks which items you are requesting, please check “Other” and specify that you want the entire file. If there is any information requested by the form that you do not know, you may omit it or provide estimates (such as for dates), but the more information you provide, the easier it will be to locate the correct file if it survived the fire. Veterans and next of kin of deceased veterans also may use eVetRecs to request records. See eVetRecs Help for instructions. For more information see Official Military Personnel Files (OMPF), Archival Records Requests.

World War II era OMPFs may also be requested by visiting the Archival Research Room at the National Archives at St. Louis. Please see the linked website for more information.  Email stlarr.archives@nara.gov for further assistance prior to making an appointment.

Since some veterans registered with their state or local veterans service agencies after they separated from service, we suggest that you contact the state or county veterans agency where John J. Hall lived for additional assistance. Please review the NPRC web page Other Methods to Obtain Military Service Records for more information. Please be advised that registering discharge papers with local and state authorities was optional, so we cannot guarantee that these types of organizations will have his records.

We located the series Draft Registration Cards for Pennsylvania, October 16, 1940–March 31, 1947 in the Records of the Selective Service System, 1926–1975 (Record Group 147) that includes the draft registration card for Arlie Richard Shaneyfelt. We are attaching the card (front and back) to the end of our reply.

You may also wish to request his Classification History (SSS Form 102). The Classification History may contain: name; date of birth; classification and date of mailing notice; date of appeal to the board; date and results of armed forces physical examination; entry into active duty or civilian work in lieu of induction (may include date, branch of service entered and mode of entry, such as enlisted or ordered); date of separation from active duty or civilian work; and general remarks. Please complete a Form NA-13172 to request a search of these records and email it to the National Archives at St. Louis (RRPO) at stl.archives@nara.gov. We recommend that you attach the draft registration card, as it includes information which will make it easier to locate his classification history. For more information, see Selective Service Records.

Finally, you may also wish to contact the Air Force Historical Research Agency (AFHRA) and the National Archives at College Park for additional guidance regarding unit records.

We hope this is helpful with your research!
