Researching the 72nd Publicity Services Battalion (WW2).

I am trying to find information about the daily operations of a WW2 unit, the 72nd Publicity Services Battalion. They provided drivers and assistance to the war correspondents at the First Army Press Camp and I think they also worked with the Ninth Army Press Camp. The online catalog has a few hits, but they just don't seem to be related to the operation of that unit. I cannot find anything that would point to a unit journal or any reports. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  • My archive is buried. I would have to dig it up. To get you started I would suggest the following.

"Never a Shot in Anger, By; Col Barney Oldfield USAF (ret). ISBN 0-88496-307-1

"Report of Operations (Final after Action Report) 12th Army Group. VOL.XIV, Publicity and Psychological Section.  This was a restricted publication but it is sometimes available on the open market. It was a set like an old encyclopedia.

I also have a complete roster with personnel address. A map of my fathers movement with 3rd Army and much more

Another book that is hard to find. "Drunkin'19.  My Service with General Patton's Third Army Press Camp  By C. Victor Moore.

  • Thank you for your response.  I have read the book by Oldfield.  Several parts of it sounded like he had access to company journals when he wrote it, so I then went to examine his papers in Lincoln NE.  A lot of photos of old movie stars and much correspondence about his idea for a TV series about war correspondents. Nothing of value to me.  I have a copy of the Report of Operations and it has proven to be very useful.  "The Signal Corps: The Outcome" has also been useful.   I found a few minor documents from the papers of Thor Smith and CD Jackson at the Eisenhower Presidential Library. I'll start looking around for the Moore book. Later, Jay
