Death of Officer in 1961 on Okinawa at the Stilwell Field House

We are searching for the name of an officer killed at the Stilwell Field House in Okinawa during 1961. He would have been in the 2nd Airborne Battle Group 503rd Infantry Combat Team. We believe he was in Head Quarters Company at the time. He was a Staff Seargent in Delta Company 2/503 and had gotten his commission back from when he was in the Korean War before he died.

We mainly need his name.

Thank you,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

The Textual Reference Archives II Branch (RR2RR) does not have records regarding deaths of individual soldiers during the Cold War. We do not have a name index to Army records among our holdings. A search of our holdings found no records for the 503rd Infantry Combat Team during 1961.

Morning reports for Army units dated 1960-1974 are in the custody of NARA's National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis. The morning reports are arranged by unit number and date, but will indicate only that an individual was on sick call. They will not provide medical data relating to that individual. Your request would need to be narrowed to an approximate period within 1961 (no greater than three months). Please complete a GSA Standard Form 180 and mail it to NARA's National Personnel Records Center, (Military Personnel Records), 1 Archives Drive, St. Louis, MO 63138-1002.

U.S. Army criminal investigation records are in the custody of the U.S. Army Crime Records Center, 27130 Telegraph Road, Quantico, VA 22134. The telephone number is (571) 305-4224.

We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!

    Sincerely,

  • I tried running a search of the Stars and Stripes Archives for all of 1961. Nothing shows up for the combination of Simpson and 503rd. A lot shows up for died and 503rd, but nothing about a member of the 503rd dying--just the two words on the same page in different articles. same with killed and 503rd. Are you sure it was in 1961? If you can get better fidelity, I can run the search again and see what pops. They had a mess sergeant in the 2/503rd dying in the hospital, so I would assume an officer's death would make the paper as well.

  • Can you run a search from May 1960 - May 1962 under the 25th infantry Division?

    Thanks,

  • I was in Okinawa 1961 - 1962 in the  airborne unit - we were separated at the time from the 25 th division and were designated a combat team - 356 or 365 or ? There was a death but I don’t recall the details….I hope that helps it search

  • I was in Okinawa 61 and 62 we were not attached to the 25 th division we were an infantry combat team 356 or 365 or? There was a death in the unit when I was there but I don’t recall the details
