Help with Mystery Bronze Star (WWII)

Greetings,

What's the best way to go about finding info on my grandfathers Bronze star?  I did some research many years ago and wasn't looking for this particular medal, so nothing turned up.

I was able to obtain a bunch of AAR's (which are an absolutely FASCINATING read) and other info for his Battallion, but nothing I have mentions a Bronze Star.  I pieced together a little narrative which may help with pinpointing his records and would love to be able to find some specifics on his Bronze Star award.  I just don't know where to start or what online resources may be available to me.

PFC Romeo Landry: Patton's 45th Division (Thunderbirds), 180th Infantry, 1st Battalion, Company A. Left Chesapeake Bay in June 8, 1943 on the USS Calvert. His convoy sunk a U-boat near the Canary Islands, sailed through Gibraltar Straits in Jun 21 and landed in Port auz Poules, Algeria. July 1943, left Africa and was part of the Invasion of Sicily during Operation Husky. Landed between Gela and Scogliti. Sept 1943 left Sicily for the Naples-Foggia Invasion of mainland Italy. Pushed north towards Austria / Germany and on May 11, 1944 earned his Combat Infantryman Badge, shortly after would nearly have both feet amputated due to trenchfoot caused by cold and wet conditions.  Sent home shortly after (with both feet).

Any guidance would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thank You,

Kevin Landry

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

General Orders (GO) among the division records provide more information concerning the Bronze Star awards. They are arranged by year and then by GO Number. The soldier’s personnel file usually provides the year, date and GO number for an award.

We suggest that you request a copy of his Official Military Personnel File (OMPF). OMPFs and individual medical reports for enlisted men of the U.S. Army who were separated from the service after October 1912 and before 1960 are in the custody of NARA's National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) in St. Louis. In many cases where personnel records were destroyed in the 1973 fire, proof of service can be provided from other records such as morning reports, payrolls, and military orders, and a certificate of military service will be issued. Please complete a GSA Standard Form 180 and mail it to NARA's National Personnel Records Center, (Military Personnel Records), 1 Archives Drive, St. Louis, MO 63138-1002. Veterans and next of kin of deceased veterans also may use eVetRecs to request records. See eVetRecs Help for instructions. If there is any information requested by the form that you do not know, you may omit it or provide estimates (such as for dates), but the more information you provide, the easier it will be to locate the correct file if it survived the fire. For more information see Official Military Personnel Files (OMPF), Archival Records Requests.

Archival OMPFs may also be requested by visiting the Archival Research Room at the National Archives at St. Louis. Please see the linked web pages for more information.  Please email stlarr.archives@nara.gov for further assistance prior to making an appointment.

We searched the series titled World War II Operations Reports, 1940-1948 in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office, 1905-1981 (Record Group 407) and located approximately 6,000 pages of general orders for the 45th Infantry Division during WWII.

For more information about these non-digitized records, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RR2R) via email at archives2reference@nara.gov.

We hope this assists you with your research!

     Sincerely,

Textual Reference Archives II Branch (RR2RR)
