Question

Seeking Civil War records for George Sparrow 53rd Indiana Infantry Company G. Joined 24 Dec 1861 and mustered out 11 Jul 1865. Wounded and captured at battle of Atlanta. Any records of his capture, imprisonment (Andersonville) and escape?

 We concur with the previous recommendation to request his service record and his pension files as well as additional records, and to contact the Indiana Historical Society. We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the series Indexes to the Carded Records of Soldiers Who Served in Volunteer Organizations During the Civil War in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office, 1762 - 1917 (Record Group 94) that includes an index card for Sparrow, George - Unit: 53rd Infantry, Company: G - Enlistment Rank: Priv, Discharge Rank: Priv . The index card indicates that there should be a Compiled Military Service Records (CMSR) for George in the series Carded Records Showing Military Service of Soldiers Who Fought in Volunteer Organizations During the American Civil War in the Record Group 94. Unfortunately, the records for George Sparrow of the 53rd Indiana are not yet available online.

 The Carded Medical records recommended to you are the Carded Medical Records of Volunteer Soldiers in the Mexican and Civil Wars, 1846 - 1865 in Record Group 94. These records are not online and are not ordered via a standard form. As mentioned by the previous response, the Regimental and Company Books of the 53rd Indiana Infantry Regiment in Record Group 94 are also not available online. 
 
 In regards to imprisonment at Andersonville, we searched the National Archives Catalog and located 16 series in Records of the Commissary General of Prisoners (Record Group 249) relating to Andersonville, to include registers and morning reports of Union/Federal prisoners of war held in Andersonville Prison, Georgia. Plus, we located Rolls and Reports of Federal Prisoners of War Who Escaped from Confederate Prisons, 1861&ndash;1865 in Record Group 249. These records are not available online.
