US Army 12th Infantry Regiment After Action Reports, July 1944

I'm doing research on the fighting in Normandy, France during the month of July 1944 in the vicinity of Sainteny and St. Jean-de-day. I'm particularly interested in the After Action Reports of the following units: US 12th Infantry Regt., 8th Inf. Regt., 70th Tank Battalion, 117th Inf. Regt., 119th Inf. Regt., 33rd Armored Regt. of the 3rd Armored Division, 36th Armored Infantry Regt., 83rd Recon. Battalion, Combat Command A and Combat Command B (of the 3rd Armored Div.). I'm searching to see which of these units might have faced German Panther tanks (Mark V) before, during, or after July 8, 1944.

  • Dear Mike Barnett,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

Your research into these various units should begin with the following two entries, (note that these are not digitized and therefore not available online):

We searched National Archives Catalog and located the World War II Operations Reports, 1940-1948 in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office, 1917 - 1985 (Record Group 407) that includes records of units during WWII. For more information about these non-digitized records, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) via email at archives2reference@nara.gov.

  • Dear Mike, did you find the AAR for the 12th IR for the month of July 1944 ? I am also looking for if particularly for the day of July 13th, regarding the fights in the vincinity of Sainteny and the death of Sergeant John M. OSEA. Thanks a lot

  • Nicolas,

The archives just scanned July but the rolls have no character recognition. Here is the link to rolls 514 no. 1-4. As far as I can tell the 12th is at the end of roll 1 and the beginning of roll 2. https://catalog.archives.gov/search?page=1&q=Morning%20Reports%20for%20July%201944%20roll%20514

July 13th was around the time of the "Sunken Road." My father was in F Company at the point and was pinned down for multiple days. What company was Sergeant OSEA in? I can look also in the morning reports.   Do you have access to the "History of the Twelfth Regiment in World War II" by Colonel Gerden F. Johnson?
