Seeking list of French Medal of Honor given to American Ambulance Drivers

Seeking records WWI French Medal of Honor to American Ambulance Drivers. The Croix de Guerre 1914–1918 is a French military decoration, the first version of the Croix de Guerre. How would I find records of my Grand-father who was an Ambulance Driver that saved several French soldiers, receiving this medal in France. The French Croix de Guerre was awarded to French and Allied soldiers, including 11,589 Americans, for their service during World War I and was authorized by French legislation on April 2, 1915.  Are there documents that list these Americans?

Parents
  • I have a database of the French Croix de Guerre to Americans for WW I service. It contains 10,100 verified names. Please send me your grandfather's name, and I'll see if he is in my database.

  • That would be wonderful.

My Grandfather was George Fletcher Freeborn, my great uncle (and my namesake) was Charles James Freeborn and their sister was Adelaine Freeborn, whom I also believe was awarded a Croix on account of her resistance efforts. Their house in Houlgate was taken and occupied by the German army.

    Many Thanks!

  • Charles James Freeborn  received his firs Croix de Guerre (with gilt star) for service while serving with the American Field Service in SSU (American Ambulance Unit) 2. He received his second Croix de Guerre (with palm) while serving as a captain in Section No. 2 of the US Army Ambulance Service. His second award was denoted in War Department General Orders No. 53 dated April 19, 1919. I have no record of a Croix de Guerre to Adelaine Freeborn, but if she was not an official part of the AEF an award would not be part of the Army's record. Hope this helps!
