Seeking booklet titled "Air Battle over Buchenberg"

The 483rd Bomb Group had many B-17s shot down on the Memmingen mission of July 18, 1944. There is a 2004 booklet of 84 pages written in German and published there by Willi Heuberger entitled "18.Juli 1944 Luftschlacht uber Buchenberg" (translated: Air Battle over Buchenberg). That city has a monument to the loss of American lives during that key battle. The book includes many German documents about this significant air battle from the viewpoint of their military. Is anyone aware of an English translation of this book, and, if so, could you share that information? Alternatively, is there someone who might take on the translation since companies that do this type of work price the effort over one thousand dollars.

  • Hi Bart,

I assume you've probably tried just about everything to get that booklet including the following. Apparently there's a small museum in the town of Buchenberg and perhaps, if you haven't done so already, someone there might be able to help you: https://www.heimatmuseum-buchenberg.de/

Another option, with respect to a translation, you might want to reach out to Roland Geiger who is an avid genealogist and lives in Germany, and who speaks and writes fairly good English, he might be able to assist you with a translation. I don;t know him, but know of him, so mentioning my name will probably not help but do reach out to him and see what he says. If he can't help you directly he might have some better suggestions that what I just came up with.

    In any event, good luck!

  • Despite the title of the message chain, I have the booklet. I'm just searching for a translated version. Thanks.

  • Hi Bart,

Since you have a copy of the booklet in question then you have another option, more in the "self-help" category. You can scan the booklet into digital form and then copy and paste the scanned text onto one of any number of online translators, such as Google's, which should give you a fairly decent translation from German into English. It wouldn't perfect but it will certainly provide you with a fairly good idea of the content, and it's an economical way to get at whatever facts you may want to extract from the booklet.

    Good luck.
