Dear Patricia Anderson,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the series Cavalry Unit Records, ca. 1965 - ca. 1973 in the Records of the U.S. Forces in Southeast Asia (Record Group 472) that includes the records of 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry and 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry for 1969-1970. These records may include organizational histories, intelligence reports, intelligence summaries, operational reports-lessons learned, command reports, newspaper clippings, photographs, daily journals, situation reports, accident reports, general orders, and operation planning records. Generally, these records reflect the activities of the units themselves and not individuals within the units. We also located 8 additional series of After Action Reports (AARs) and Operational Reports - Lessons Learned (ORLLs) related to the 1st Cavalry Division in Records Group 472. Plus, the series After Action Reports, 3/1/1965 - 8/1/1975 in the Records of the Army Staff (Record Group 319) also contains information about the 1st Cavalry Division. These records have not been digitized. For more information about these and similar records, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) at archives2reference@nara.gov.
You may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgment as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RDT2. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience as we balance mission-critical work and the safety of our staff during the pandemic. Please check NARA’s web page about COVID-19 updates for the latest information.
For additional assistance, we suggest that you contact the 1st Cavalry Division Museum, the U.S. Cavalry Museum, the U.S. Army Center of Military History, or the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center, which has a large collection of published unit histories.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
