Re: Seeking Navy records about Canadian-born gr-grandfather
Laura Roche Mar 22, 2019 12:55 PM (in response to Elliot Schneider)All good info, Thanks.
However I'm doing genealogical research on my gr grandfather, and this enlistment is the earliest I find linked definitively to him. So, I'm looking for any biographical info that may have been required as part of the enlistment, particularly since he claimed to be foreign-born.
So, I'm seeking to understand if add'l info was required, and where I can see it.

Thank you for posting your request to History Hub!
Navy enlistment records for the time period you are researching can be accessed online for free in the FamilySearch database United States Naval Enlistment Rendezvous, 1855-1891. This database includes two entries for David A. Taylor. The first is for an enlistment on May 3, 1883, and the second is a reenlistment on November 22, 1886. Their database is compiled from digitized images of NARA Microfilm Publication M1953, which in turn consists of images of the record series Weekly Returns of Enlistments at Naval Rendezvous, 1/6/1855 - 8/8/1891 (National Archives Identifier 2363711). This series are in the custody of the National Archives at Washington, DC - Textual Reference (RDT1) which can be contacted via email at archives1reference@nara.gov.We also searched the Official Military Personnel Files, 1885 - 1998 and found a record for Taylor David A -- [Date of Birth] 11/15/1860, [Service Number] 001972005, [Date of Enlistment] 05/03/1883 that may be a match for your inquiry. This file is in the custody of the National Archives at St. Louis (RL-SL), which can be contacted via email at stl.archives@nara.gov.
Some of the additional record series that may have information about your great-grandfather include Muster Rolls of Naval Ships, 1/1/1860 - 6/9/1900 and Records Relating to Enlisted Men Who Served in the Navy Between 1842 and 1885, 1885 - 1941. These series are in the custody of RDT1.
We hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your family research!
