2 people found this helpfulDear Mr. Schneider,
Thank you for contacting the History Hub!
If your father served before 1973, then his OMPF (even though he was a Reservist) may have burned with the rest of the Army OMPFs in the fire at the NPRC in 1973. If your father received discharge papers or other similar documentation when he left the Reserves, then he may have taken them to the County Veteran Affairs Office as advised to do so. Especially if he ever wanted to receive VA benefits via the GI Bill.
If you know what unit he served with, these unit records may be in the custody of the U.S. Army Reserves History Office. For information and guidance on access to the Army Reserve Historical Research Collection, you may contact the Office of Army Reserve Archivist, 1401 Deshler Street SW, Fort McPherson, GA 30330. The telephone number is (404) 464-8461 and her email address is deborah.fosterking@usar.army.mil.
We hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your family research!

Elliot Schneider Mar 1, 2018 8:41 AM (in response to Rebecca Collier)Rebecca,
Did have a chance two weeks ago reached out to her. She said they do not store records. But forward me to the Army History Center for lineage type of things not really what I was really looking for. I do know units he was in since he kept a log. But do you know if NPRC in St Louis or NARA in College Park have officer records maybe in RG 338?

2 people found this helpfulDear Mr. Schneider,
IF the Army Reserve unit records were retired along with the Regular Army unit records, it would depend on which “war” or time period as to whether the records would be in RG 338 or a number of other Record Groups. The Textual Reference Archives II Branch of the National Archives in College Park has custody of unit histories and supporting documents for Army units for the period 1917 through 1974. However, records for Army units active during the inter-war periods (1920-1939 and 1945-1950) are incomplete. They also have custody of the records of Army units that served in Vietnam. There are a few records of units that were not in Vietnam and they consist mostly of unit organizational histories and general orders.
No matter the time period, the files are arranged by unit, and identification of the unit is necessary before a search can be conducted. They do not include personnel or medical information. And no name index to these records exists.
If we knew the unit and the time period that you are seeking, we could be more specific in our response.

Re: How can one obtain records of Army Reserve appointments, promotion, and commissions?
Elliot Schneider Mar 1, 2018 2:12 PM (in response to Rebecca Collier)Hello Rebecca,
I have unit info from a log book he kept. Do you think if I fill out the information using the SF-180 form that it would produce better results because I'm also giving the unit information and time frame. Most of his service time in the reserves was during the Korean war, and Vietnam war. He was always stateside during these two wars but was involved in administering polygraph test on cold war prisoners.

Elliot Schneider Mar 1, 2018 2:06 PM (in response to Michael Tomko)Hello Mr. Tommow,
Even at the Active Reserve level. Do you know of any resources? I have tried the Pentagon library but but they tell me that it's not open to the public, any other suggestions.

Re: How can one obtain records of Army Reserve appointments, promotion, and commissions?
Michael Tomko Mar 1, 2018 2:39 PM (in response to Elliot Schneider)Officers are commissioned, usually through completion of an academy, Officer Candidate School or ROTC.
Some of the Medical Officer Commissions may not have attended a formal academy, OCS or ROTC program or Flight School.

Re: How can one obtain records of Army Reserve appointments, promotion, and commissions?
Michael Tomko Mar 1, 2018 2:47 PM (in response to Elliot Schneider)Most researchers look for dates of commission in the congressional record.
Not all ROTC graduates become active duty officers, many remain in the reserves.
College transcripts would list the ROTC courses, such as leadership, mountaineering ....

Re: How can one obtain records of Army Reserve appointments, promotion, and commissions?
Michael Tomko Mar 1, 2018 3:14 PM (in response to Elliot Schneider)Also, as an officer in a reserve unit, there may be unit reports, after actions, training reports, reports of survey that they completed. Also a Table of Organization Equipment and vehicles which are usually completed and signed for by the officers. Some of the forms may be destroyed, but an After Action and Exercise Report may exist.
