Dear Ms. Haase,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
Depending on the type of information you are seeking, there are a number of resources you may wish to explore for your research. For example, we searched the National Archives Catalog and located 13 series related to "organized crime", 1 series related to "mafia", and 4 series related to "racketeering" in the Records of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (Record Group 65) that may be of interest to you. We also located 23 series related to "organized crime", 2 series related to "mafia", and 25 series related to "racketeering" in the General Records of the Department of Justice (Record Group 60). These records have not been digitized. For information about these and similar records, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) at email@example.com. Please include as much information as possible in your inquiry, such as specific names, dates, and crimes.
Next, we located 2 series related to "organized crime" and 9 series related to "racketeering" in the Records of District Courts of the United States (Record Group 21). These records have not been digitized. Please contact the National Archives at Boston (RE-BO) at firstname.lastname@example.org with questions about these records. We located 21 additional series related to "racketeering" in Record Group 21 at the National Archives at Philadelphia (RE-PA). For assistance with these non-digitized records, please contact the RE-PA via email at email@example.com. For more information about potential court records, we also suggest that you use the Catalog to review descriptions of records from the various U.S. District Courts for state of New York. You may contact the National Archives reference unit listed in each Catalog description, such as the National Archives at New York (RE-NY) at firstname.lastname@example.org, for more information about those records.
Plus, we located 3 photographic series related to "organized crime" and 1 photographic series related to "racketeering" in Record Group 65 that may be relevant to your research. Some of these records have been digitized and may be viewed online using the Catalog. For information about the non-digitized records, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Still Pictures (RDSS) at email@example.com.
In addition, we suggest that you search The National Archives Catalog for other potentially relevant records. You may use the Advanced Search feature to search within a particular record group or to narrow your results by time frame, location, and so forth. If you are researching specific individuals, occurrences, or crimes, you may be able to use the Catalog to locate additional resources.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RDT2, RE-BO, RE-PA, RE-NY, and RDSS. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.
Further, we located a number of potentially useful resources online, including Giovanni E. Schiavo Papers, 1874-1983 at the Center for Migration Studies of New York (CMS). You may contact them, the New York State Archives, or the New York City Municipal Archives directly for additional guidance. You may be interested in the library guide for Organized Crime, Mafia and Gangsters from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
