1 person found this helpfulI would suggest contacting the New York City Municipal Archives for assistance. They maintain records of deaths in the five boroughs of New York City prior to 1949. You can find additional information about their holdings, as well as ordering information here: http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/html/archives/genealogy.shtml
You might also contact the New York State Archives, as they hold vital records for the state New York. http://www.archives.nysed.gov/http://-

chris lorenzoni Aug 7, 2017 10:59 AM (in response to Research Services at the National Archives)Thank you very much but I've been to the municipal archives many times and actually they were not very helpful. Ed best I check the death certificates from Richmond County as someone from Nara compiled a list of the Dead from quarantine up until 1911. Unfortunately my guy is after this and I could not find any records thinking they may be destroyed. It's a shame because his family has been looking for more than 10 years and the man was 50 years old. He tried to make it to America to start a new Life but got sick. I'd really love to help the family but I'm running out of ways to look. I will try the state archives. Any other suggestions are welcome.

If the Municipal Archive was unable to find the name in their death index you may want to search the New Jersey State Archives. During some time periods the death would have been reported to New York at other times to New Jersey.
