Seeking Navy unit with the number 02959.

I found a document on ancestry.com that indicated an award for service in US Navy military unit number 02959. Is there a listing of Navy military units? What ship was unit number 02959?

The number you cite is called the Unit Identification Code (UIC).   It is a key data field in U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps administration, finance,  and logistics documents and systems.  Unfortunately there is no comprehensive listing of all UICs ever issued by the Navy and Marine Corps—the codes can be reused.  Currently assigned UICs were once available in the Navy Comptroller (NAVCOMPT) Manual Volume 2 Chapter 5; however, This publication is regularly updated, and the superseded publication is discarded.

In order to find the information you are looking for, you will need to find the NAVCOMPT Manual Volume 2 Chapter 5 in effect for the date of the document you found on Ancestry.  Because of the constant changes, there is a question whether any of the NAVCOMPT Manual volumes are considered permanent records—my former NARA colleagues would have to answer that question for you.

I wish there was an easier path to follow.
