    WWII AAF Mission Report

I am trying to locate a “Mission Report” of a single plane of the 7th AAF (raid on Puluwat Atoll 23 Apr 1944) that was referenced in CINCPAC Press Release No. 370 of 24 Apr 1944: "…Puluwat Island was bombed before Dawn on April 23 by a single Seventh Army Air Force Liberator, …" I have concluded it may have been a plane assigned to 7th AAF, 30th Bombardment Group, 27th Bombardment Squadron.

I am a novice with identifying where records may be filed, but this description seems to fit: 18.7.1 Records of the Office of the Commanding General Textual Records: … AAF World War II combat operations records ("Mission Reports"), consisting of narrative and statistical summaries, intelligence reports, field orders, loading lists, and other records, arranged by unit, 1941-46 (1,855 ft.)

I cannot determine who I contact to receive a copy. Does anyone know?

          Dear Ms. Collins,

Thank you for your History Hub question. The reference (18.7.1) is from our guide to federal records and it is a vague description of the records that we hold in our custody but does not actually lead to records. I have quickly checked both our finding aids and in our catalog for the Army Air Forces Mission Reports (Record Group 18 Entry (NM-6) 7A for records concerning the 27th Bomb Squadron and the 30th Bomb Group. Unfortunately, we do not have any records for 27th Bomb Squadron but we do have records for the 30th Bomb Group. The following files cover the time frame for the raid on Puluwat Atoll.

          Mission Analysis Reports:https://catalog.archives.gov/id/2867498

          Mission Reports: https://catalog.archives.gov/id/2867497

          Mission Combat Reports: https://catalog.archives.gov/id/2867496

Two other useful places to look for information regarding bombing in the Pacific Theater would be the following two series:

          RG 341 Entry (NM-215) 217: Military Intelligence Photographic Interpretation:https://catalog.archives.gov/id/654709

RG 243 Entry (I-10) 41: Pacific Survey Reports and Supporting Records, 1928-1947:https://catalog.archives.gov/id/561631

If you have any other questions or wish to order copies of these records please write to the Textual Reference Staff at the National Archives in College Park, MD since all of these records are located here. Their email is archives2reference@nara.gov.

Please note that you can only order three files at a time. Best of luck in your research!

There are also additional unit histories and supporting documents of Army Air Force units in the custody of the Air Force Historical Research Agency, 600 Chennault Circle, Building 1405, Maxwell Air Force Base, AL 36112-6424. These files often include historical reports. You may  also want to call (334) 953-2395 or write to that office for further information concerning any records in their custody. The web site is http://www.afhra.af.mil/.
