You can sort your search results in the National Archives Catalog by date. You can type and conduct your search and in the bottom left hand side, you will see a bunch of date ranges. If you click on one, it will give you results of your search within that date range. We do not have an option at this time to sort by state. You can try adding those search terms to your initial search to see if that helps.

The National Archives (NARA) is the repository for the records of the US government, which did not begin until the Continental Congress, so they would not have records from the 17th and first three-quarters of the 18th C. You would find early Virginia records in the Library (Archives) of Virginia Library of Virginia.
