Dear Mr. Donlon,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the series Indexes to the Carded Records of Soldiers Who Served in Volunteer Organizations During the Civil War in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office, 1762 - 1917 (Record Group 94) that includes an Index card for Peter Donlon. We also located the series titled Carded Records Showing Military Service of Soldiers Who Fought in Volunteer Organizations During the American Civil War in Record Group 94 but were unable to locate a card for a Peter Donlon. Most of the service records in this series have been made available via microfilm and through digitization of the microfilm. Unfortunately, the records for New Jersey Volunteers have not been microfilmed or digitized. For information about the non-digitized records, please contact the National Archives at Washington DC - Textual Reference (RDT1) via email at email@example.com.
In addition, we located the Regimental and Company Books of Civil War Volunteer Union Organizations, 1861 - 1867 in Record Group 94 that includes the file unit Regimental and Company Books of the 35th New Jersey Infantry Regiment. These records have not been digitized. For more information, please contact RDT1.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RDT1 and RDSS. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.
You may wish to review these websites: Library of Congress Civil war photographs, 1861-1865; New Jersey State Archives Civil War Service (Stryker’s) Records; New Jersey in the Civil War; and Soldiers and Sailors Database - The Civil War (US National Park Service) for more information and/or resources.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your family research!
