Seeking military history of John Rotondo & Daniel Madigan

Hello, My friend, Jody Rotondo, and I are planning a battlefield trip to learn and honor American sacrifice during 1943-1945 in the Pacific Theater, from Guadalcanal through Okinawa and more. Jody's father, John A. Rotondo, was a Navy man from Chicago, IL and died in 1990. Service information Jody had about his father's service is from word of mouth and an oil painting of a ship John was to have served aboard. From this painting, John, we believe was gunner's mate on a minesweeper late in the Pacific campaign. His ship or others nearby were said to have suffered Kamikaze attacks/damage. From my cousin Dan, my uncle, Daniel F Madigan, was a Marine from Chicago IL. who served at Guadalcanal and/or Okinawa not sure if it was the 1st or 6th Marine Division. Daniel F Madigan, I was told, was at the end of his service transported to the US Naval Hospital San Diego to treat malaria/trench rot(?). Any help is very much appreciated.
