Re: Seeking detailed look at daily activities of Company G, 308th Infantry
John Plunkett Jul 10, 2020 12:20 PM (in response to Alice Lane)Thank you for the rapid reply and the aid given .
The 305th although a member of the 77th div. could be deployed in quite a different manner from the 308th. I did go through the book to give myself a flavour of the actions that the 308th could have experienced. The 308th really got whacked in the earlier defensive phases of the war.
Now those maps will be quite helpful because they will show the exact disposition of the forces involved. My inquiry is an attempt to delve down deeper to the platoon level and the sections they covered.
This is why I am looking for the daily logs, missing Field Orders and War Diary of the 2nd battalion. I know box 3079 contains records of Co. G, but know not what they are. Boxes 36 through 38 contain 308th inf. records; but again, I do not know what type . I might already have copied them. Do you posses a more detailed break down of what is contained in those boxes? If they are of interest, will the archives be able to make copies?
Thank You for the help already given and any possible leads on these other matters.
Be Safe,
John Plunkett

Joseph Armstrong Jul 11, 2020 6:21 PM (in response to John Plunkett)Hi John,
Thank you for posting to the History Hub. Looks like you have most everything you need. Unfortunately daily company reports are destroyed after about six months. I would suggest looking for news paper accounts, Diaries from fellow soldiers, or books from fellow soldiers. Usually a company was always in the same place so if an individual kept a diary, we might assume that a soldier a few paces down the row participated in what is being talked about. Especially things like food, weather, mission and recreation. They are usually a daily account.
Hope this helps,
Joe

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
Morning reports for Army units (from November 1, 1912 to 1959) and copies of most of the monthly rosters from November 1912 - 1943 and 1947 - 1959 for Army units are in the custody of the National Archives at St. Louis, MO. The series Records of Divisions, ca. 1918 - 1942 in the Records of the American Expeditionary Forces (Record Group 120) includes records of the 308th Infantry Regiment, 77th Infantry Division in Boxes 36-38. Additional records of the 308th (Box 2133) are included in the series Records of the 1st Through 338th and the 559th Infantry Regiment, 1/1/1916 - 12/31/1921 in the Records of the United States Regular Army Mobile Units (Record Group 391). These records may include the records you seek. For access to these records, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) via email at archives2reference@nara.gov. Records of lower echelon units such as companies sometimes were incorporated into the files of the regiment.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RL-SL & RDT2. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
