Seeking definition Supreme Court uses to determine a law unconstitutional

What definition does the Supreme Court use to determine if a law is unconstitutional? I use to have but now can not find it anywhere. As I recall it was adopted in the 1800s and went something like "any law that violates the letter or spirit of the Constitution of the United States of America. It is ipso facto, not a law and therefore, unenforceable."
