Re: 748th Railroad Operating Battalion and 61st Railway Operating Company (composite)

While not a member of either of these two companies, the National Archives at College Park does have some records that might be of interest.
First, there is a unit history for the 748th Transportation Battalion. The file unit (folder or volume) is part of a larger series of unit histories. The catalog entry can be found here: 748th Transportation Battalion (Railway Operating): History.
Second, in this same series, there is a file unit for 61st Transportation Corps Railway Operating Company. It can be found here: 61st Transportation Corps Railway Operating Company: History.
For either file unit, you can contact the Reference team at Archives 2 in College Park, MD, at Archives2Reference@nara.gov
Best of luck in your research!

Scottie Slayback Apr 14, 2016 8:53 PM (in response to Ann Abney)Thank you very much for the information. My grandfather was attached to both but was killed shortly after the war. My father and I have little knowledge of his wartime experiences

Cheryl Leonard Jul 25, 2016 5:54 AM (in response to Scottie Slayback)Hello, Scottie. My grandfather, Robert J Smith, who is 96 years old, was a member of both the 745th and 748th Railway Operating BN. I just obtained his discharge papers in order for my son to apply for a scholarship, so I then saw your request and had to join to respond to you. My grandfather lives in Ohio. He spent his time in India, and came was sent overseas from Fort Harrison, Indiana.
