You might want to try and get copies of the silver star order, and after action reports. Here is the order# that you will need to request from the Textual records in College Park, MD.

Headquarters, 85th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 84 (1944).

            Dear Mr. Sauer,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

We searched the World War II Operations Reports, 1940-1948 in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office (Record Group 407) and located General Order No. 84 dated 17 December 1944 of the 85th Infantry Division that describes Lt. Wooddell actions for receiving the Silver Star. For a copy of the general order, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) via email at archives2reference@nara.gov and provide RDT2 with this citation -- RG 407, NM-3 427, File 385-1.13, GO# 84 dated 17 Dec 1944, Box 10668.

The information about how he died may be contained in his Individual Deceased Personnel File (IDPF). For the IDPFs from 1940-1976 of personnel with surnames that begin with M-Z,  please write to U.S. Army Human Resources Command, Casualty & Memorial Affairs Operations Division, ATTN: AHRC-PDC, 1600 Spearhead Division Avenue, Department 450, Fort Knox, KY 40122-5405.

We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
