    Reviewing Mary Church Terrell papers

      Hi Henry

I'll use this thread to post details of progress as I work through the documents you've transcribed, and details of any edits I make, so you can go back in and either accept them if you agree, or re-edit - let me know if you re-edit and I'll go back and re-review.

I've started working through the 1908 diaries:

      https://crowd.loc.gov/campaigns/mary-church-terrell-advocate-for-african-americans-and-women/diaries-and-journals-1888-1…

I've accepted a few pages, and edited two:

      Page #83:

      https://crowd.loc.gov/campaigns/mary-church-terrell-advocate-for-african-americans-and-women/diaries-and-journals-1888-1951/mss425490005/mss425490005-83/

      Line 11:

Changed "Dr Summer Bromley" to "Dr Sumner Bromley".

It looked more like "Sumner" to me, so I Googled the name, and found that it was indeed "Sumner". Apparently he had a fine baritone singing voice.

      Page #84:

      https://crowd.loc.gov/campaigns/mary-church-terrell-advocate-for-african-americans-and-women/diaries-and-journals-1888-1951/mss425490005/mss425490005-84/

      Line 3 (now line 2):

Moved line 3 "for Col Social Settlement." up to line 2, above the printed date.

Reason being so that it makes sense when read out using assistive technology for blind readers, and the only reason the second pencil-written line was placed below the date was because of lack of room above the date, otherwise it would clearly have been written above the date along with the first line.

      More later...

Hi Donna- thanks for doing this. Please, do not spend a lot of time listing all of your edits. It's too much work for you. What I would suggest is for you to let me know once you have finished a year. If there are some pages left to review I will assume you edited those pages. I trust you, so don't feel the need to explain. In some of my transcriptions, I may not have been sure where to place lines, etc. so your changes I am sure will be helpful. By the way, I will be away for a few weeks so I may be on more sporadically. If I do not respond right away it is because I am unavailable not disinterested.

          Thanks again,

          Henry

Many thanks for that, Henry. I started out listing the little changes I had made so that you could focus on reviewing what I had changed without having to check through the whole document each time, but if you're happy for me to just go ahead without doing that, I'm very happy to do so!

Re being away at times and not replying to any posts here immediately, that is of course absolutely fine - we all work on these transcriptions at our own pace, and we all have other commitments that require our time and attention. Apart from anything else, now that I realise that *all* posts here are moderated, and not just mine (i.e. Newbies), I don't want to perpetuate the rather large spike I've already created in the moderators' workload in terms of a constant stream of posts that need to be reviewed and cleared for publication.

So, going forward, I'll simply post in the Susan B Anthony thread when I've finished a batch of papers there and they're ready for review, and similarly here when I've finished reviewing a particular batch of Mary Church Terrell documents, so that you (or anyone else who is interested) can go through and review the ones I edited rather than accepted.

Hi Donna- I'm fine checking the whole document. Actually, I have checked them multiple times. When we first started transcribing, we were not permitted to edit our transcriptions once we submitted them for review. A few months ago they changed it so we would edit our own submissions but not approve them so I went back and reviewed the diaries knowing I had made mistakes. Of course, I'm sure I still missed some. I enjoy rereading the diaries so I don't mind going through the whole document. I appreciated your listing the corrrections but frankly it was too much work for you and too many messages for me. Yesterday, I went into 1908 and reviewed pages that I am assuming you had edited. I know that I reached the end of your work when I reached pages that I had edited. We will figure it out. Right now, it seems to be working well for me. I will get right on the Susan B. Anthony pages.

                  Thanks,

                  Henry
