Here is some general information about visiting the Cartographic and Architectural Research Room:
The Cartographic Research Room is located on the 3rd floor of the National Archives at 8601 Adelphi Road in College Park, MD. It is open to researchers from 9 a.m.to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday and with limited services on Saturday. No appointment is necessary.
We have closed stacks, meaning records are brought out to researchers at specific pull times throughout the day. We currently have the following 5 pull times Monday through Friday: 10, 11, 1, 2 and 3. Researchers may request up to 10 folders/boxes/items at a time. We are not able to pull records on Saturdays.
Researchers are required to register and complete an orientation on their first visit to the National Archives; a photo ID is required, and the process takes around 20 to 30 minutes.
Onsite copies of oversize records up to 36" wide can be obtained in our research room Monday through Friday. Fees for paper photocopies are $3.50 per linear foot b&w/$5.00 per linear foot color: there is a ten copy per day limit. Scanned reproductions are $3.50 each with the same copy limit of 10 per day. Self-service copies of microforms and standard size records up to 11" x 17" may also be obtained for a fee. We are not able to copy records on Saturdays. The use of non-flash photography is permitted.
